3 alleged hijackers dead after shoot-out in Benoni
A Hawks operation in Crystal Park led to a high-speed chase, resulting in suspects being shot dead and a woman rescued.
Three men, allegedly linked to a spate of kidnappings and hijackings along Elm Road in Crystal Park, Benoni, were shot and killed by members of the Hawks’ Tactical Operations Management Team (TOMS), just after 20:30 last night, reports Benoni City Times.
According to Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale the unit received information about a trio of men perpetrating crime in the area.
“TOMS officers were deployed to tactically patrol the area in search of the suspects, who, according to information, were travelling in a silver Opel Astra,” she says.
“During the operation, officers came across an attempted hijacking. The suspects had already forced the female driver of a Fiat from her vehicle and had bundled her into the Astra.”

A high-speed chase ensued, and the suspects opened fire on the police officers.
“The suspects’ vehicle collided with a side barrier, which sent the vehicle into a nearby ditch. The shoot-out continued, resulting in all three being fatally wounded,” confirms Mogale.
The victim escaped the incident unscathed.
Two firearms, as well as the victim’s personal belongings, were found inside the vehicle.
“Investigations into the matter are continuing. At this time, it is not clear how many incidents of kidnapping and hijacking the suspects can be linked to,” she says.
