2-year-old murdered in Sedgefield: Suspect arrested

A man alleged to have stabbed a toddler to death is in police custody.

A two-year-old toddler from Smutsville in Sedgefield in the Western Cape was stabbed to death last night.

Southern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Christopher Spies said in a statement that according to preliminary information, police were summoned to a house in Smutsville at about midnight.

“Upon arrival, they found the body of the toddler with multiple stab wounds. The victim was declared deceased by paramedics.

“A search for a man, suspected to be involved with the killing, ensued with assistance from the community.

“The man was later accompanied to the satellite police station by a member of the public, where he was arrested.

“The motive for this killing is unknown and forms part of the ongoing police probe.”

The suspect (21) remains in police custody.

He will appear in court once charged.
