2 shootings in KZN, 1 in Eastern Cape: Cop among 4 killed

A bloody Monday morning in KZN and the Eastern Cape has left four people dead, including a policeman.

The fatalities happened in three separate shooting incidents this morning.

A policeman died and several others sustained injuries after an armed robbery near the Total Filling Station on Main Street in Bizana in the Eastern Cape, near the border of KZN, reports the South Coast Herald.

The newspaper states that according to unconfirmed reports, the death and injuries happened during a shoot-out between police and alleged robbers.

The paper says that details are limited at this stage and an official police statement is awaited.

In a separate incident, Ladysmith Gazette reports that two people were shot dead in the St Chad’s area of uMnambithi (Ladysmith).

“It has been reported that suspects opened fire on a taxi. Aside from the two fatalities, two other passengers were injured and rushed to hospital,” it reports.

The newspaper says a case of murder is being investigated by local police, and that the motive for the killings is unknown.

A third shooting incident was reported in Merebank, Durban.

The Witness reports that a man was found dead with a bullet wound to his head.

The newspaper explains that paramedics responded to the incident, on Basil February Road under the M4 bridge in the south of Durban, just after 06:00.

“Paramedics arrived on the scene to find SAPS on scene with the area cordoned off. Paramedics were shown to a male believed to be in his 40s who had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to his head,” ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson told the publication.

The man was declared dead and local police are investigating further, Jamieson added.
