2 dead newborns found at Ekurhuleni dump site

Police have urged community members to come forward with information relating to the discovery of two deceased newborns at a landfill site.

Recyclers at the Rietfontein landfill site in Ekurhuleni found two deceased newborns in garbage bags on Tuesday morning.

According to Sergeant Themba Tshabalala, Springs SAPS communications officer, the recyclers came across the tragic scenes while sorting through waste for recyclable materials.

“They notified the police station and officers swiftly responded to the scene. They found a full-term newborn baby boy deceased, still attached to his umbilical cord and placenta,” says Tshabalala.

It is not known if the baby was alive when it was dumped. Tshabalala says paramedics declared the baby dead on the scene.

While awaiting the arrival of a mortuary van, another tragic discovery was made.

The recyclers stumbled on a second full-term baby boy, also with his umbilical cord and placenta attached. He was found approximately 20m from the first baby.

“The second baby appeared to have been born recently.”

Springs SAPS has opened two cases of concealment of birth.

“We urge anyone with information that may assist in tracking the mothers to come forward,” Tshabalala says.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Springs SAPS on 011 365 5700.
