1 critical after attempted hijacking near Mandeni toll on N2

A courier driver was critically injured in an attempted hijacking, while the suspects fled empty-handed.

Several suspects reportedly got away empty-handed after attempting to hijack a courier vehicle on the N2 in KZN earlier this morning.

The incident occurred at about 07:00 near the Mandeni toll.

According to IPSS Security and IPSS Medical Rescue who responded to the call, the courier vehicle was travelling north when it was stopped by one vehicle with four armed suspects.

“The suspects opened fire on the vehicle, critically injuring the courier driver,” said IPSS spokesperson Samantha Meyrick.

“The armed escort of the courier vehicle managed to return fire, reportedly injuring one suspect. The four suspects in their vehicle got away empty-handed.”

The courier driver was treated and stabilised by IPSS Medical Advanced Life Support before being airlifted to a nearby hospital.

The road was closed for a short while to allow for the Netcare helicopter to land, load the patient and take off.
