6 toxic ingredients to look out for in skincare products

Understand the risks of common toxic ingredients in beauty products and how to choose safer alternatives – and that goes for men too.

How often do you look at the ingredients list on your skincare and beauty products? Probably never, right? You’re not alone. Many products now proudly state on the front of their packaging that they are paraben free, but what does that actually mean? And what else should you be looking out for?

Find the answers to these important questions by taking a look at six of the most common toxins to avoid below with the help from Eco Diva:

  1. Parabens: These synthetic preservatives, often found in moisturisers and shaving gels, can act as hormone disruptors. Studies have linked them to reproductive issues and even certain types of cancer.
  2. Phthalates: Common in fragranced products, phthalates are linked to hormonal imbalances and fertility issues. They’re also potentially carcinogenic, making them a no-go for any personal care product.
  3. Formaldehyde: Used as a preservative, formaldehyde has been classified as a known human carcinogen by health organisations worldwide.
  4. Triclosan: An antibacterial agent often found in soaps and shaving creams, triclosan is linked to hormone disruption and may contribute to antibiotic resistance.
  5. Synthetic fragrances: “Fragrance” on an ingredient list is often a cocktail of chemicals, some of which can cause allergic reactions, respiratory issues, and even hormone disruption.
  6. Sulphates (SLS/SLES): These harsh detergents are responsible for that foamy lather but can strip your skin of natural oils, causing dryness and irritation.
