The inspiration behind the cucumber basil smash

This cocktail's light, refreshing profile makes it perfect for sipping by the pool, for sundowners, or serving as a pre-dinner aperitif.

When the sun is shining and the temperatures are rising, there’s nothing quite like a refreshing cocktail to help you cool down and unwind. The Cucumber Basil Smash is the perfect drink to do just that – an invigorating blend of gin, vodka, fresh basil, citrus, and cucumber.

The Cucumber Basil Smash is inspired by the classic smash cocktail, a type of mixed drink that traditionally combines a spirit with fresh herbs, fruit, and ice. The addition of cucumber and basil brings a unique twist to the classic smash, introducing cool, crisp, and slightly herbal notes that perfectly complement the botanicals of gin and the smoothness of vodka.

Basil is often associated with savoury dishes, but its slightly peppery and aromatic qualities also work wonderfully in cocktails. Citrus – typically lemon or lime – adds a tangy note that cuts through the richness of the spirits.

Ingredients

Method

Prepare the Simple Syrup:

  1. To make simple syrup, combine equal parts sugar and water in a small saucepan.
  2. Heat over medium heat, stirring until the sugar is fully dissolved.
  3. Allow the syrup to cool before using. Simple syrup can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Muddle the Basil and Cucumber:

  1. In a cocktail shaker, add the fresh basil leaves and cucumber slices.
  2. Muddle gently with a muddler or the back of a spoon to release the flavours and oils from the basil and cucumber. Be careful not to over-muddle, as you want to extract the flavours without breaking down the basil leaves too much.

Add the Spirits and Citrus:

  1. Add the gin, vodka, fresh lemon juice, and simple syrup to the shaker.
  2. Fill the shaker with ice and shake vigorously for about 20 seconds, until the mixture is well chilled.

4. Strain and Serve:

  1. Strain the mixture into a glass filled with fresh ice.
  2. Top with a splash of sparkling water or soda water for added fizz.
  3. Garnish with an extra slice of cucumber and a sprig of fresh basil.
