Tips for camping in winter

Are you keen on going camping? Don’t let freezing temperatures dampen your spirit. Winter isn’t a sign to pack away your camping gear for the warmer months.

While camping in winter can be slightly more challenging, it can also be extremely special, exciting and memorable. Here are a few tips to consider when camping in winter:

Check the weather

Like all outdoor adventures, it is extremely important to check the weather forecast before you go winter camping. Having an idea of the weather conditions you will encounter is very helpful. When you know just how low the temperatures are expected to drop, you will be better prepared in terms of clothing and supplies.

Dress in layers

Layering up is an important aspect of winter camping. Layers give you greater control over regulating your body temperature. Make sure your base layer is moisture-wicking in order to keep your skin dry. You can then add an insulating middle layer, as well as a waterproof and wind-resistant outer layer. Add and remove layers accordingly when necessary as you move through the activities of the day.

Invest in a good sleeping bag

The quality of your sleeping bag can either make or break your winter camping experience. Invest in a sleeping bag with the appropriate temperature rating. It is advisable to choose one that is 10 degrees lower than the coldest temperature you expect. In doing so, you will ensure that you remain warm throughout the night, even if temperatures happen to drop unexpectedly.

Have plenty of hot drinks

Hot beverages play a crucial role in keeping you warm when camping in winter. Convenient and easy-to-prepare drinks such as instant coffee normally do the trick.

Use the old hot water bottle trick

One easy way to keep warm at night is to heat water and place it in a plastic bottle. Place it in your sleeping bag and you’ve got a warm camping snuggle buddy. Ensure that it is tightly sealed and that it is not hot to a point where you will burn yourself.
