Stoan back on the music scene

A near-death experience prompted the release of Tshepo ‘Stoan’ Seate’s single, ‘Maru Ga Se Pula’, featuring Mhaw Keys.

Legendary musician and member of Bongo Maffin group, Tshepo Seate, popularly known as Stoan, has signalled his comeback to the music scene after a 20-year hiatus.

The kwaito star’s music spark was ignited by a near-death experience at the beginning of the year when a gas tank exploded and injured him. The horrific experience prompted him to release a single, Maru Ga Se Pula, featuring Mhaw Keys.

Speaking to Daily Sun, Stoan said: “It’s a story of an accident and the subsequent victory over pain that I had when I had an accident on New Year’s Eve; [a] gas explosion, I got burnt.

“I got second and third-degree burns on my arm, hands and my face. It sparked me to get into music again, and I haven’t released a song for almost 20 years as a solo,” he said.

Stoan told the publication that he plans to release singles throughout the year, leading up to his birthday in 2025.

“Right now, it’s about music moving towards 50 years next year on May 9, and it’s about bringing back the music and storytelling… But, at the same time, we matured other work that we are doing around…”

Speaking on Vow FM about his music, in a video he shared on his Instagram page, the artist said he infused amapiano into his songs. He said it’s best to work with young creatives and find fresh sounds.
