Dreams take flight at Carnival City

An inspirational story about living your dreams and fulfilling your purpose, regardless of age, unfolds on the stage of the Mardi Gras Theatre, at Carnival City, on October 14 and 15.

As Drome Vlerke Kry, a production by Frans Swart, is a must see for those who appreciate a good old, authentic Afrikaans story.

Told in a fresh musical theatre-style, the story plays out in a retirement village called Huis Silwerjare, where two young-at-heart, world-famous entertainers bask in the memories made along their life journeys in days gone by.

Arina de Witt, noted South African singer and actress, plays the role of Aria von Waltzleben, later known as Fanny Galore.

In her younger days, during the ’60s, Aria was a star in Las Vegas.

Starring beside her is Egbertus Wolmarans, played by Hennie Smit.

Egbertus, famous entertainment star and teacher from Ariumsvlei, has been in love with Aria for many years, and now, finding themselves in the same retirement village, it is time for them to produce something spectacular and As Drome Vlerke Kry is it.

Fans can expect to see de Witt, whose wide vocal range, diversity in various genres and timeless repertoire in various languages remain her unique stamp, perform familiar songs.

Among others, she will sing familiar Piaf, Callas, Mouskouri and Garland songs, as well as a few treasured Afrikaans originals.

De Witt made her TV debut on Spies and Plessis with her and Jan Spies’s song, called Rietjiesfluit.

In 1992, she released her debut album, which included Wals van die Somer and Skatkis vol Drome.

Hennie Smit, better known as Bertie to all old Egoli fans, was the perfect person to play the role of Egbertus.

Having played various roles in radio productions for Springbok Radio and the SABC, Smit made his on-screen debut in the film Pretoria, o Pretoria! in 1979.

He went on to star in 33 other films, six of which were international.
