East Rand bands rock it out for the Widows and Orphans fund

The cream of the new wave of East Rand rock bands joined forces with the Advertiser to raise funds for the Widows and Orphans Fund for Members of the South African Police Service.

The night of rock ‘n roll, hosted by the Advertiser’s assisant  editor Leandi Cameron, and Lithium’s Dave Beretta Owens, was held at the The Barnyard Theatre, Emperors Palace, on November 2.

Brig Stefan Pieterse attended the show as the VIP Guest of Honour. Pieterse has 23 years’ service in the SAPS and is a director on the board of directors for the Widows and Orphans Fund.

The Fund was founded on July 23, 1920, and became a company on December 8, 1993. The Fund is a private organisation that is managed as a non-profit company.

The purpose of the Fund is to give financial assistance to the dependants of the deceased. There are currently 658 widows and widowers and 7 970 orphans who receive allocations from the Fund.

Speaking at the event, Pieterse expressed his thanks and appreciation for the support and the donation.

“On behalf of the chairperson of the Widows and Orphans Fund, Gen Craemer, we express our sincere gratitude to The Barnyard Theatre and the Advertiser for hosting a music show in aid of the Fund.

“I am sure that you will agree that the talent and production was amazing,” says Pieterse.

Fans enjoyed the alternative country sounds of Crystal Park and the soaring acoustic force that is Trevor Rebello, as well as the crazy antics of nu-rock sensation Made In Wrong Kong, who recently floored audiences on the Barnyard éVoid 30th Year Anniversary tour.

Dirty Moonshine and The Fever Dogs made sure for some edgy swamp-rock tunes, and Them Bandits for no-nonsense pop-rock filled with more hooks than a bait shop.

“I went to school at CBC Boksburg, so it was a real blast to perform in my teenage hood,” says Danny de Wet from Made In Wrong Kong.

“Thanks to Advertiser and The Barnyard for the opportunity and Brig Stefan Pieterse who has to be the most funky law-enforcement officer in the land!” – @IschkeBoksburg
