GWM P500 wins South African Bakkie of the Year

The Great Wall Motors P500 Hybrid was crowned the 2024 South African Bakkie of the Year, marking a significant milestone for Chinese automotive manufacturers in the South African market

The GWM P500 HEV Ultra Luxury 4×4 9AT has made history by becoming the first Chinese
bakkie to win the South African Bakkie of the Year (SABOTY) competition. The prestigious
award recognises the best bakkie introduced in South Africa in a year, based on a
comprehensive evaluation process.

The GWM P500 impressed the judging panel with its exceptional performance in various
categories, including off-road capability, towing capacity, and on-road dynamics. The hybrid
powertrain also set a new standard for fuel efficiency and performance in the bakkie
segment.

Other finalists in the competition, which was held at NAMPO Cape, included the Ford
Ranger, Isuzu D-MAX, Jeep Gladiator, and RAM 1500. Despite stiff competition from
established brands, the GWM P500 emerged as the clear winner, demonstrating the
increasing competitiveness of Chinese automotive manufacturers in the South African
market.

categories, including 4×4 driving, off-road performance, towing performance, and cost of
