Nissan NP200 bakkies still rolling off dealership floors

The Nissan NP200 ranked 13th in the light commercial vehicle sales segment in August.

Despite being culled earlier this year, Nissan is still registering new NP200 sales and the model still ranks ahead of many other current mainstream titles.

Following the news in April that the final Nissan NP200 had been produced and rolled off the Rosslyn production line, some run-out stock is still being registered as new vehicle sales according to The Automotive Business Council (naamsa). Impressively popular as a budget bakkie offering during its long production and sales run, the last units of the unibody bakkie seem to be filtering out of the remaining dealerships it finds itself.

In the light commercial vehicle segment for August, of which a total of 10 709 units were sold, the NP200 ranked 13th with 132 units, only 10 behind the Caddy and a handful more behind the Suzuki Eeco’s 166 units. With data from the month, it means the discontinued Nissan still outsold the Jac T-Series, Suzuki Super Carry, Toyota Quantum, GWM Steed, Mahindra Bolero, Hyundai Grand i10 and Peugeot Landtrek, which rounded the list for light commercial vehicles over the period.

Worth noting that in its heyday, the NP200 would constantly rank well over 1 000 units per month, making it a frequent contender in the top five best-selling bakkies list. As it stands, there is no replacement in the works for Nissan, with Rosslyn now producing the Navara exclusively as part of an external push for the model into the rest of the African continent. Competitors too have no answer to fit the bill for an affordable and versatile unibody bakkie but some interest has been shown by both Volkswagen and Fiat. Time will tell if either of these automakers are able to capitalise on the gap in the local market.
