The BMW M5 Touring represents the pinnacle of high-performance estate cars, a concept that, while seemingly contradictory, has captivated enthusiasts since its inception. The third-generation model, recently unveiled, is now the latest chapter in a storied history.

The lineage of the M5 Touring traces back to 1992 when BMW introduced the first-generation model based on the E34 platform. It was a groundbreaking concept, marrying the blistering performance of the M5 sedan with the practicality of a wagon body style. This original M5 Touring, with its potent naturally aspirated inline-six engine, quickly garnered a cult following among those seeking a unique blend of speed and utility.

Despite its success, the M5 Touring remained absent from the BMW line-up for several years. It wasn’t until 2007 that the second generation arrived, based on the E61 platform. This iteration benefited from advancements in technology, featuring a powerful V10 engine and sophisticated chassis systems. While still a rare and coveted model, the E61 M5 Touring further cemented the concept’s appeal.

Now, with the introduction of the G90-based M5 Touring, BMW has once again raised the bar. Aesthetically, the new M5 Touring adheres to the contemporary BMW M design language, featuring the signature oversized kidney grille, sharp LED optics, and muscular contours. The rear end is distinguished by slim taillights and a diffuser housing quad exhaust outlets, visually affirming the car’s sporting character.

Beneath the skin, the Touring benefits from the same advanced chassis architecture as its sedan counterpart. This includes double-wishbone front suspension, five-link rear axle, adaptive M suspension, active M differential, and rear-axle steering. The car rides on staggered 20- and 21-inch alloy wheels, with optional carbon-ceramic brakes.

The interior mirrors the driver-oriented cockpit of the M5 sedan, featuring a digital instrument cluster and a large central infotainment display. M-specific sport seats provide ample lateral support, while the inclusion of advanced amenities such as a head-up display and quad-zone climate control underscores the car’s luxury orientation.

Powering the M5 Touring is a hybridized 4.4l V8 engine producing a formidable 535kW and 1000N.m of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission distributes power to all four wheels, with the option to engage rear-wheel drive for a more purist driving experience. BMW claims a 0-100km/h time of 3.6 seconds. As an option, the M Driver’s Package ups the limiter to 305km/h.
