With the arrival of GAC, the landscape of Chinese automotive brands in South Africa will expand even more. GAC joins other established Chinese brands like GWM and its Haval division, JAC, BAIC, BYD, Chery with its Omoda and Jaecoo brands, and more recently, LDV. GAC’s debut line-up will include two SUVs: the Emzoom and the Emkoo.

Focusing first on the GAC Emkoo, this five-seater SUV boasts a height of 1 670mm, a width of 1 901mm, a length of 4 680mm, and a wheelbase of 2 750mm. Although GAC has not yet confirmed the engine specifications for the South African market, the Emkoo is available internationally with two engine options. The first is a 1.5l turbo petrol engine that delivers 177kW and 270N.m of torque, mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The second option is a 2l hybrid system producing 138kW and 180N.m, providing a more eco-friendly choice. Both powertrains drive the front wheels.

Next in line is the GAC Emzoom, positioned below the Emkoo in terms of size. The Emzoom measures 1 600mm in height, 1 850mm in width, and 4 410mm in length. This SUV is designed to offer a balance of style and practicality. Internationally, the Emzoom is equipped with a 1.5l turbocharged petrol engine, generating 130kW and 270N.m of torque. This engine, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, ensures smooth power delivery to the front wheels, with peak torque available from just 1 400r/min, making it ideal for both city driving and longer journeys.

GAC’s entry into South Africa is set to intensify the competition in the SUV segment, offering consumers more choices and potentially shaking up the market dynamics. The introduction of the Emkoo and Emzoom is eagerly anticipated, and their performance on local roads will be closely watched by both industry experts and potential buyers.
