A smoky twist on the classic Negroni cocktail

The key to the Mezcal Negroni's distinct character is mezcal, a traditional Mexican spirit distilled from agave.

The Mezcal Negroni stands out as a bold reinterpretation of the classic Negroni. This contemporary variant maintains the original’s balance and complexity but introduces a distinctive smoky flavour, courtesy of mezcal.

Ingredients

  • 30 ml Mezcal
  • 30 ml Sweet Vermouth
  • 30 ml Campari
  • Orange peel, for garnish

Method

  1.  In a mixing glass filled with ice, combine the mezcal, sweet vermouth, and Campari. The choice of mezcal can greatly influence the drink’s flavour profile, so select one that suits your taste preferences.
  2. Stir the mixture for about 30 seconds, ensuring it’s well chilled and diluted.
  3. Strain the cocktail into a rocks glass filled with a large ice cube. The use of a single large cube helps to minimise dilution, preserving the cocktail’s integrity.
  4. Express the oils of an orange peel over the drink by twisting it, then rim the glass with the peel.
