North community holds Relay For Life to fight cancer

“We relay as a team to support those who have cancer and for those who have left us."

The Laerskool Magalieskruin in Sinoville hosted the second Relay For Life for cancer awareness on Saturday afternoon.

Members of the community did not only participate in various games but also honoured those who have been touched by the disease.

Families camped out in the afternoon before the relay, where they were entertained by young singers and dancers.

The theme for the 2019 CANSA relay was “Why do you relay?”
“We relay as a team to support those who have cancer and those who are supporting them. And again, we relay for those who have left us due to cancer,” said organiser and event chairperson Lindie Rossouw.
She said the community relay started last year, at Toutrek park before it was moved to Sinoville.
“I took over as (event)chairman this year, for the team and decided to move it to a school to raise awareness for children as well as the local community,” Rossouw said.
Rossouw said the most important to thing to do was to celebrate, remember and fight back.
“Every year, more than 115 000 people in South Africa are affected by cancer. We’re challenging participants to stand up for those individuals touched by cancer and to raise awareness and funds for CANSA in Gauteng.”
Later, a tribute was paid to those who lost their battle, and those still battling the disease.
The event started at 08:00 and continued until 20:00 in the evening, Rossouw added.
