Pretoria mother on mission to make this a better world

A Pretoria woman is doing her bit to make a difference in the life of the less fortunate girls and terminally ill children on the continent.

A Pretoria mother, businesswoman and second-year psychology Unisa student recently won the title of Ms. Global United in Massachusetts, Minnesota in the US.

Lucinda du Plessis won for her effort to raise the awareness of good hygiene among young girls across the continent.

As part of her prize and title, Du Plessis has to contribute to a charity of her choice and host or attend 10 of its events during the year of her reign.

“Instead of having one charity, I took it upon myself to have three. I am in the very fortunate position to be the ambassador for Cupcakes with Kids for Cancer, to be a part of Dignity Dreams which provide girls with washable, reusable sanitary pads – a pack of six last up to four years – and I also donate bags of basic hygiene products like roll-on, lotion and other products to girls less fortunate,” says du Plessis.

Two of these projects were already completed when du Plessis left for the competition in July.

Du Plessis is a member of Africa Pageants, which sent her to the competition to represent South Africa.

“There were eight category winners this year, by July next year, I’ll enter for another category to compete against this year’s seven other winners. The judges will take my charity work into account and If I win in this category, I’ll receive a new crown and sash, be regarded as a lifetime queen and I will always be a part of this special pageant,” explained Du Plessis.

Du Plessis will spend eight days in the Democratic Republic of Congo with Africa Pageants from October to assist Dignity Dreams train young girls to effectively use reusable sanitary pads.

“Children are my absolute passion in this world. These less fortunate, or terminally ill children did not choose to put up with the life they’re leading. I really want to make a difference, and plan on doing so to better the world we live in,” she said.
