Moot band targets youth

“Our sound is inspired by bands like Queens of Stone Age, Good Charlotte, Sum41 and other rock bands.”

Moot punk rock band Joy Club Cassidy Cassidy wants to bring South African music closer to the youth.

Lead singer and guitarist Jordan Redcage, drummer Ed Kid Carter, bassist Ban-Ban Hotrod and lead guitarist Khat Boley formed the band last year.

“We are influenced by punk rock but we [are] kind of going with different layers of punk and hard rock. We don’t really have a certain genre that we play, all depends on the mood and progression of the song,” said Redcage.

“Our sound is inspired by bands like Queens of Stone Age, Good Charlotte, Sum41 and other rock bands.”

Describing its style, the band said it focused on more upbeat guitar orientated kind of music.

“If it’s hard and fast you want, they bring it with aplomb, if it’s more rock and roll you’re looking for. If on the other hand, you are in need of some more pop sounding college type rock, no-one does it better. ”

“We try very hard to sound different but yet youthful. Our sound is uplifting, friendly and vibrant. We are trying to be visible to the young ones, especially high schoolers. That’s why we are getting involved in many local high schools not only to play music but to inspire them,” Redcage said.

Three of the band members teach music by day – Hotrod, Boley and Carter and make music during their free time “about once a week”.

Redcage said Boley (19), a Johannesburg resident, didn’t always have time to travel to the capital.

“We normally write our music based on people’s perspective, how they view the world and the ideology of sarcasm. We try to avoid writing generic lyrics about romance, heartbreak and all that stuff. We try to write our music in a smart way.

While most bands’ focus is the lead singer, for Joy Club Cassidy Cassidy its the drummer.

“People think drummers are just there to make the music sound cool but it’s more than that. As a drummer, you are overseeing what’s happening. It’s a rush and you need to be on point,” said Carter.

The band has written close to 24 songs and “the idea is to release a 3 song EP sometime this year”.

“Boley is currently making demos…I think he makes a better sound overall.”

In the future, we want to play on bigger shows, create a huge fan following and get the music out. For that to happen, we’ll need a lot of stuff on the radio.

We are just a good bunch of people who love hanging together and making music. We don’t drink and smoke. We are known as a bunch of morons who really make good songs.”
