Five ways to celebrate Youth Day
Youth Day is around the corner and what better way to celebrate our rich history than by taking your family for a tour of how we came to where we are now.
Youth Day is on 16 June every year to commemorate the young souls South Africa lost in the Soweto uprising in 1976.
It is important to continue teaching children about historic events like this.
Here are five things you and your family can do on Youth Day this year.
1. Visit the Hector Pieterson memorial and museum
Hector Pieterson was the subject of a powerful photograph taken by Sam Nzima. Pieterson was 12 years old when he was shot and killed by police during the violent uprising.
By visiting the Hector Pieterson memorial and museum, you’ll be able to view photographs, testimonies and footage of the uprising and protests of that time.
2. Walking tour from Hector Pieterson Museum to Mandela House in Vilakazi Street
Take a guided tour from the Hector Pieterson museum to the Mandela House. While walking, enjoy an informative explanation of what happened on that day. There are also information boards to assist tourists.
3. Visit Walter Sisulu Square
Walter Sisulu Square in Kliptown is home to the Freedom Charter Monument. The Freedom Charter is the foundation of the South African Constitution.
4. Take your kids to the Apartheid museum
The Apartheid museum illustrates the rise and fall of apartheid and shows how the Soweto uprising fit in the downfall of the racist regime. This is a really important place for all South Africans.
Constitution Hill was a prison for some time and held many of the anti-apartheid activists and in the mid 1990’s it was chosen as the site for the new Constitution Court. Here you can explore the old men’s and women’s prisons as well as visit the magnificent Constitutional Court.
