Music is my everything – Centurion pop sensation

“In the next few years, you will see me performing live at a music festival like Oppi or Rocking The Daisies, performing music that touches people’s souls."

Former Southdowns College learner Tamaryn Nicholson is hoping to build up her brand as a singer while pursuing her career as a publicist and blogger.

The 24-year-old recently told Rekord that music has helped her rediscover herself.

“Music is literally my whole life. It drives my passions and ambition. It has and still continues to get me through every aspect of my life. It has been there when no one else was, and it understood me when nobody else could,” she said.

Although she has been singing for 14 years, Nicholson said her two years in Centurion taught her a lot about music.

“I was lucky enough to be in the boarding house with my fellow music students and it was the best two years of my life. We learnt everything from classical music theory, to contemporary solo and band performance.”

She said her teacher Sheldon Leal wanted her and other students to learn more about the music business.

“Apart from the lessons, the mere exposure to other incredible artists and practical experience is where I learnt my most valuable lessons in music.”

The pop singer said the music industry was one of the most difficult industries to get a breakthrough in.

Nicholson said she aimed to bring people together and grow her brand KARMA.

“In the next few years, you will see me performing live at a music festival like Oppi or Rocking The Daisies, performing music that touches people’s souls. I would also like to see KARMA as a brand that is recognised across South Africa.”

She gave credit to her vocal coach Beverly du Bruyn and Leal, her teacher in Centurion.

“My family, friends and publicists are the most incredible support system, so I would definitely thank them for helping me get to where I am today. However, I would honestly say that I am my biggest motivator. Mainly because I am my biggest critic, and I have extremely high expectations for myself.”

Nicholson recently released her new song Image (Marc Ronin X JungleGum Remix), which is a remix from her original song released last year.

She said the goal was to release more music and play live.

“I want to release an EP within in the next year or so. I am self-funded and an album or EP can be very expensive so it takes longer. At the moment I am just focusing on making music that authentically resonates with me and releasing when and as I can.”
