The SA national council for the blind (SANCB) hosted its very own “Dragon’s Den” function on Friday where visually impaired entrepreneurs from across the country could present their business ideas.

In 1991 the SANCB added entrepreneurial development and support to its list of services. Since then they have helped to establish over 70 small businesses run by visually impaired people across South Africa.

The day saw over 30 enterprises, presented by support officers, introduce their business propositions, to be evaluated against a 10-point selection criteria. Some businesses manage to excel in their chosen fields while others are in need of urgent support.

It is estimated that there are approximately 750 000 visually impaired people in South Africa, with 97% unemployment among them.

The SANCB aims to change these statistics by providing community-based rehabilitation, income-generating initiatives and micro/small-business development among independent, strong-willed visually impaired individuals.
