Heritage Day: Chinese South Africans

South Africa celebrates National Heritage Day on 24 September 2015. We are a proud Rainbow Nation with 11 official languages across our beautiful country, and today we take a look at all our unique cultures that make us one of the most diverse countries in the world.

Chinese South Africans (simplified Chinese and traditional Chinese) are Chinese who reside in South Africa whose ancestors came to South Africa in the early 20th century.

South Africa has the largest population of Chinese in Africa, and most of them live in Johannesburg, the “economic hub for all of southern Africa”.

Population: 350 000 (2011 Census)

Regions where most Chinese people live: Durban, Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth.

Languages spoken by Chinese South Africans: English, Cantonese, Mandarin and Taiwanese.
