Mamelodi to celebrate its first gay pride

The first ever Mamelodi gay pride will be held on Saturday at Moretele Park.

Mamelodi will hold its inaugural lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) get-together on Saturday, the organisers said.

The event, known as a pride, would start at 11.00 at Moretele Park and would be in the form of a social picnic. Various organisations would take part and there would be HIV-testing and counselling (HCT), LGBTI information stalls and food stalls.

Jay Matlou, health officer at OUT which is organising the day, said the idea was to create a safe social space for LGBTI people and their supporters. “This includes celebrating and increasing the visibility of LGBTI people to access HCT services.”

Maltou invited the LGBTI community, supporters, their families, friends and other organisations to attend the event.

“It will be fun. It is an opportunity to meet and socialise with a strong focus on celebrating the non-LGBTI that continue to support the LGBTI, all while highlighting issues that affect our community.”
