The National Zoological Gardens of South Africa's 115th birthday celebrations are cancelled on Tuesday due to the sentencing of Oscar Pistorius.

The National Zoological Gardens of South Africa has cancelled their 115th birthday celebrations on Tuesday due to the sentencing of Oscar Pistorius, communications officer Angeliné Schwan said.

“In light of the sentencing of Oscar Pistorius, we have made the decision to cancel/postpone tomorrow’s event at the zoo,” she said.

The event was to include two lion cubs which were born on 8 October, to represent their 2014 birthday celebration.

“We understand the importance of the newsworthiness of the sentencing and the media engagement in this story. We will keep you posted on any further developments pertaining to our event,” Schwan said.
