Popular Cape Town rap group settles in Boksburg

The group's music carries messages on social commentary issues affecting the community.

Cape Town’s popular rap group, Driemanskap, have recently moved to Boksburg with the aim of growing their brand.

The multi-talented four-member group consists of Sonwabo Kambi (Ma-B), Dlambulo Mancunga (Dla), Bukhulubakhe Nompetsheni (Redondo) and Elethu Mpengesi (El nino).

The group was formed back in 2001 while they were still in high school.

The group is popularly known for their ‘Spaza hip-hop’ music conveyed in IsiXhosa mixed with English and Afrikaans.

Some of their hit songs include Camagu, Sphum’egugs, Ivamna, I will make it and Izulu lelam.

Ma-B said their music carries messages on social commentary issues affecting the community.

“We use the platform given to speak for the mute with attempts to bring about change. Our music appeals to all ages because of its relevance and how it is composed,” he said.

According to the group, what sets them apart from other four-member groups is their understanding for one another that they are all different therefore they don’t have to sound the same.

“We find a way to compliment one another on stage or when composing our music there’s just a natural chemistry that just makes our working environment very fun,” Dla said.

The group has performed in Zimbabwe, Zambia, Sweden, France, Reunion Island, Denmark and all over South Africa.

They have shared the stage with international heavyweights in the music industry such as Alicia Keys, Kendrick Lamar, Angie Stone, SWV, Wutan Clan and Deap Prez.

“Some of our career highlights was when we performed at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival in 2016, being featured in a television show in Sweden and sharing the stage with Kendrick Lamar and Alicia Keys,” El nino said.

  • Moving to Boksburg

“We are in the quiet side of Boksburg (Parkrand) and I must say it’s a cool place if you want to have peace of mind and it helps us focus on composing more music.

“However, it is a bit far from Johannesburg which tends to make it hard for some people to come see us such as friends and business potentials. Other than that it’s all good,” Redondo said.
