South Africa’s ‘Day Walker’ set to host The Daily Show

After only appearing on the show three times on previous occasions, South African comedian Trevor Noah is set to replace Jon Stewart as host ‘The Daily Show’.

According to a report by Time, Trevor Noah, who has been a contributor on The Daily Show for barely four months, will replace Jon Stewart as host of the Comedy Central satirical news show.

The formal announcement will be made Monday, the New York Times reports, less than two months after Stewart said he will be leaving the show following a successful 16-year tenure in the faux anchor chair that saw him turn the show into a cultural touchstone of comedy and political satire. Noah has appeared on the show only three times.

“You don’t believe it for the first few hours,” Noah was quoted by Time speaking from Dubai, after learning of the new job.

“You need a stiff drink, and then unfortunately you’re in a place where you can’t really get alcohol.”

Stewart said in a statement told Times that he ‘may rejoin as a correspondent just to be a part of it’!

“I’m thrilled for the show and for Trevor,” Stewart said. “He’s a tremendous comic and talent that we’ve loved working with.”

Noah has been on the South African entertainment scene since playing a cameo role in SABC 3’s daily soapie, Isidingo in 2002.

The following two years he spent two years years hosting an educational show for SABC2, during which time he started hosting his own radio show on Yfm called Noah’s Ark.

On the local comedy scene, he thrilled the audience with ‘Day Walker 1’ and ‘Day Walker 2’. Noah’s comedy shows have continuously had a lasting impression on the South African audience.
