KZN bail hearing set for man accused of IFP councillor’s murder

A man arrested for the murder of a political party’s councillor is due to again appear in court in December.

The Mtubatuba District Court in KZN today postponed to December the bail application of the suspect arrested in connection with the 2023 murder of a councillor in the area.

Mthenjwa Buthelezi (32), who was arrested for the murder of the late Mtubatuba IFP councillor, Innocent ‘Killer’ Mkhwanazi, will remain in custody while his defence prepares for his bail application, which is set to be heard on December 19.

The accused was arrested for the murder of Mkhwanazi last July, and the state has indicated that it intends to oppose bail.

Buthelezi was arrested by police in Mtubatuba on four counts of attempted murder and one of murder.

Mkhwanazi was gunned down while travelling on the R618 with his bodyguards.
