Warning issued for damaging waves along KZN coastline

The weather service has issued a yellow level 2 warning for damaging waves, affecting a large part of the coast.

Waves of between four to five metres can be expected along the KZN coastline today after the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a level 2 warning for damaging waves.

The warning came in effect at midnight and remains in place until 18:00.

The affected area is from Port Edward in the south to St Lucia in the north, including KwaDukuza, Mandeni, uMfolozi and uMlalazi in the Zululand region.

Potential impacts include disruption of beachfront and port/harbour activities; difficulty in navigation; small vessels at risk of capsizing and taking on water; localised damage to coastal infrastructure, and localised damage to or extensive modification of beaches.

“Avoid beachfront activities like swimming or shore/rock angling; small vessels should avoid going out to sea if possible; attentively listen to the radio or watch TV and keep an eye on social media for updates,” said SAWS.
