Woman allegedly jumps from Howick Falls viewpoint

Witnesses say that there was no indication that a woman who appeared to be viewing a waterfall would jump.

A woman was found among the trees alive and responsive but her legs were seriously injured after she allegedly jumped from the Howick Falls viewpoint yesterday afternoon.

According to eyewitnesses who were at the Howick Falls at the time of the incident, they had no suspicions she would jump as she was seated and viewing the falls ‘like everyone else’.

“She came here and sat on one of the steps and smoked her vape. No one paid attention to her as we thought she was just admiring the waterfall. [The] next thing, I saw was she was seated on the rails.

“We shouted for her not to jump but it fell on deaf ears because she jumped,” said one of the people who spoke to Echo Eyethu at the scene.

When Echo Eyethu arrived at the scene, SAPS search and rescue teams as well as Midlands EMS paramedics were at the bottom of the Howick Falls searching for the woman.

A bottle of water, her vape, medical aid card and shoes were still where she was seated.

The woman was found among the trees alive and responsive but her legs were seriously injured.

Earlier yesterday, a man’s body was recovered from the Umgeni River near the Howick bridge.

It is alleged that he jumped into the river on Monday afternoon while running away from security guards. It is believed he drowned shortly after.
