Alleged hijacker shot after crash in Durban

A gunfight ensued between police and alleged hijackers after the suspects crashed a car into the fence of a business on Chris Hani Road.

A suspected hijacker was shot and injured after a high-speed chase that ended in a shoot-out on Chris Hani Road (North Coast Road), Durban, this morning.

A second suspect was arrested by police after the hijacking in Phoenix just after 10:00.

Andreas Mathios of Marshall Security confirmed that the chase ended near the Rinaldo Road and Chris Hani Road intersection.

“The suspects lost control of their vehicle and crashed into the fence of a business on Chris Hani Road. Two suspects were apprehended, and the scene has been cordoned off,” he said.

ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson added that paramedics treated one of the suspects who was injured in the shoot-out.

“It is alleged that SAPS were chasing the suspects, who crashed, and a gunfight ensued. Paramedics treated one of the suspects, who had sustained gunshot wounds to the lower half of his body. I would encourage motorists to avoid the area at all costs as it is an active crime scene,” he said.

Jamieson added that, at this stage, the events leading up to the shooting are unknown, but police will be investigating further.
