KZN municipal chief whip’s murder: Man in court

Nhlalayenza Ndlovu was, in December, shot more than 10 times in front of his wife and children at his home in Emasosheni.

A 31-year-old man appeared in the Howick Magistrate’s Court today for the murder of Nhlalayenza Ndlovu, a DA councillor and the then chief whip of uMngeni Municipality in KZN.

Thobane Masobho Hlongwa, from Kwa-Pata in Pietermaritzburg, was arrested on Friday.

He faces charges of conspiracy to commit murder, murder, possession of an unlawful firearm, and possession of unlawful ammunition.

According to the charge sheet, Hlongwa unlawfully and intentionally conspired with others to kill Ndlovu. The charge sheet further states that Hlongwa killed Ndlovu by shooting him with a firearm on December 5.

Ndlovu was shot more than 10 times at his home in Emasosheni, near Mpophomeni, in front of his wife and children.

Hlongwa is expected to make a formal bail application on Friday.

During his appearance today, the public gallery was packed with Ndlovu’s friends, colleagues, and family while armed police officers monitored the room.
