Pilot escapes serious injury in aeroplane crash after Heidelberg Great Train Race

A pilot is lucky to have only a few scratches and bruises after performing an emergency crash landing.

Disaster struck after the Heidelberg Great Train Race on Saturday when an aeroplane that was part of the celebrations crashed on its way back from the event.

The plane was on its way back from the Heidelberg Great Train Race, a vintage travel and transport show, and flying towards Vereeniging.

At about 10:30, the pilot had to make an emergency landing close to the R42, about 17km from Heidelberg in Gauteng.

The pilot, Jeff Earle, escaped the wreck with a few scratches and bruises.

“I felt something was not right and was busy losing power when I was forced to do an emergency landing,” says Earle.

The Civil Aviation Authority was notified of the accident and gave the all-clear for the aircraft to be removed from the accident scene.
