Watch: Inside wreckage of deadly Midrand complex fire

Dramatic photos and videos from inside the Broadwalk Urban Village complex, where a woman was killed, show the true damage.

It is a devastating sight as emergency services and officials walk through what remains of the Broadwalk Urban Village complex in Midrand.

The complex was destroyed at around midnight when a fire ripped through the structure.

In the walkthrough, Tshepo Setlhako of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services explains to the Midrand Reporter that on their arrival within 20 minutes, the entire top of the building was completely on fire.

Female’s body found

Earlier today, the body of a female was discovered with minimal burns to her body. The body was found on the second floor, this is despite the City of Johannesburg emergency services stating that they had conducted searches at each of the 130 apartments.

EMS spokesperson Xolile Khumalo said the body was found in the rubble under a collapsed roof.

What is the metro doing to help?

City of Johannesburg MMC for Human Settlement Mlungisi Mabaso said: “We should be working with the private developers of the property but they are not here. There are council processes that need to be followed first before we can further assist.”

Earlier this morning the owner of the complex had called local hotels to house those who had lost their homes.
