R425K found at Mpumalanga border: Man expected in court

A man reportedly attempted to jump over a fence, but was ultimately arrested for being in possession of R424 800 in undeclared cash.

A 39-year-old South African man is set to appear in a Mpumalanga magistrate’s court today after Border Management Authority officials arrested him recently, reportedly as he attempted to jump over the fence at the Oshoek Border Post to eSwatini.

The man, who was carrying a black plastic bag, was searched by officials who found R424 800 in cash, which was subsequently seized. The case was handed over to the Mpumalanga Hawks in Secunda.

Provincial Hawks spokesperson Captain Dineo Sekgotodi says the man was questioned about the origin and destination of the money but could not provide a clear explanation.

“It was also discovered that the money had not been declared as required under the Financial Intelligence Centre Act 38 of 2001, in terms of sections 54 and 30. He was then arrested and charged with possession of suspected stolen property.

“The money was seized and booked in the SAP 13 storeroom. The suspect is expected to appear in the Elukwatini Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, while the investigation continues,” Sekgotodi adds.
