A tiger cub was found and rescued from a backyard in Pietermaritzburg over the weekend.

The tiger cub, according to FreeMe Wildlife, was being kept in a “makeshift wire enclosure”.

FreeMe Wildlife were part of the rescue efforts and are currently holding the cub at their facility in Howick.

The cub is believed to be between four to five months old and was rescued by the Hawks, PMB Stock Theft Unit, Ezemvelo Wildlife, PMB SPCA, Umgeni SPCA and FreeMe Wildlife.

A criminal case will be investigated by the Pietermaritzburg Stock Theft Unit.

FreeMe said that the tiger cub weighed just over 17kg’s and was placed in their facility under infrared light, with good food and a bed of hay.

“This kitten, in its mind, is fighting for its life. These cats can be a handful and sadly as they get older, if kept as pets, have their teeth and nails removed. These beautiful new world cats should never be kept in captivity or as pets,” said FreeMe.
