Woman murdered, husband assaulted in Pretoria axe attack

A man who went outside to see why his dogs were barking was confronted by four intruders who attacked him with an axe.

Akasia police responded to a gruesome murder scene in Heatherdale in the north of Pretoria on Sunday.

It is believed that the homeowner was viciously attacked with an axe when trying to save his wife.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk says at around 02:00, officers were informed about a man who had sustained serious injuries.

Van Dyk says initial reports were that the homeowner went outside after he heard his dogs barking.

“The victim went outside to investigate and discovered four unknown [intruders] in his yard.

“He shouted to warn his wife, but before he could act further, he was overpowered and assaulted.

“The victim was struck on the head and was tied up,” says Van Dyk.

He adds that after regaining consciousness, the man freed himself and searched for his wife.

“He found her outside the house and attempted CPR, but tragically, it was too late.

“He then carried her inside the house and sought help at a nearby church,” says Van Dyk.

Akasia Action Group chairperson Quinton Painter says residents must join community watch groups to prevent such incidents.

“If I look at the comments and concerns posted by the community in Akasia concerning widespread crime and deliberate antagonism thereof by irresponsible youth, [it is] most often instigated by older persons who wish to perpetuate anarchy and lawlessness in our suburbs, townships, suburban areas and unofficial squatting areas.

“I would urge us as a total community to make a pertinent decision to counter this invasion of our lives,” says Painter.

A case of house robbery and fatal assault was opened.

No arrests have been made.
