4 European tourists attacked, 1 shot in Mpumalanga

Two Dutch and two German tourists were targeted by hijackers in two separate incidents.

While September is Tourism Month in South Africa, criminals left four international visitors with little to celebrate.

Police have confirmed that four European tourists were attacked in two separate attempted hijackings yesterday, one near eManzana (formerly Badplaas) and the other near the Oshoek Border Post.

The first attempted hijacking, in which two Dutch tourists (a man and a woman) were targeted, took place just after 11:00.

They were robbed of their belongings and the man was shot in the arm. He was stabilised at a nearby clinic before being transported to a nearby medical facility for treatment.

The second incident took place after 12:00, near the Oshoek Border Post, during which a German couple’s car was damaged as hijackers tried to force it off the road.

The couple managed to evade their attackers and drove to a nearby filling station where they waited for the police.

Mpumalanga SAPS spokesperson Captain Magonseni Nkosi says in both incidents, the hijackers drove a blue car.

Shaken up from the experience, the tourists could not confirm the number of assailants or the make and model of the vehicles.
