2 arrested after brutal Mangethe double murder

Arrests have been made after a 62-year-old man and his 43-year-old daughter were killed in the KZN town on Monday.

Police arrested two men yesterday in connection with the murder of a 62-year-old Mangethe man and his 43-year-old daughter.

The victim’s 57-year-old wife survived the attack on Monday and was rushed to a local hospital with gunshot wounds.

KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda says the men, aged 27 and 37, were allegedly looking for the deceased’s son, who they accused of having an affair with the girlfriend of one of the suspects.

“Police launched an operation, and just after midnight on Tuesday, officers apprehended the suspects at a residence in Majuba, Mandeni. They were found in possession of two firearms, one homemade and the other with its serial number filed off,” adds Netshiunda.

Before the shooting, the suspects allegedly kidnapped a man in eMakhwanini. They dragged him to nearby bushes, tied him to a tree, and gagged his mouth.

“They allegedly told the victim they were going to kill people at a particular homestead before killing him last. The man managed to free himself and alerted the police,” says Netshiunda.

The men are due to appear in the Nyoni Magistrate’s Court today.

In a separate incident, police arrested a 31-year-old man while conducting a roadblock along the N2 near the Mvoti toll plaza last Thursday.

During a search of taxi passengers, they found a man carrying an AK47 assault rifle with a double magazine, 62 rounds of ammunition, a pistol with five rounds, and an undisclosed amount of money in his backpack.

“He had disguised himself as a family man by travelling with a woman and a young child. He was arrested and charged with illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. The suspect is believed to be a member of a gang that attacked a cash-in-transit vehicle in Ndwedwe two weeks ago,” says Netshiunda.
