Alleged double murder: Mpumalanga farmer and security guard remanded in custody

Two men arrested in connection with the alleged murder of two people on a farm are due to again appear in court next week.

A farmer and security guard arrested in connection with the alleged murder of two men on a farm in Laersdrift, Mpumalanga, were remanded in custody after appearing in the Middelburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

According to SAPS provincial media spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli, Reinardt Steyn and Dumisani Chriswell Masilela were arrested for allegedly assaulting and killing two men they accused of stealing sheep.

The SAPS are said to be conducting an investigation ‘because the remains of the two victims have not yet been found’.

According to a statement issued by Mdhuli, the victims were allegedly burnt beyond recognition. SAPS went to the farm yesterday to collect ashes, which will be sent for forensic testing.

Steyn and Masilela’s bail application was postponed to September 5, and they were remanded in custody.
