Alleged drug mule caught with 10kg cocaine at OR Tambo

The swift actions of airport customs officials and sniffer dogs resulted in the arrest of three people.

An alleged drug mule who recently flew from South Africa to Brazil under the guise of shopping for her ‘upcoming wedding’ landed in hot water on her return to OR Tambo International Airport yesterday.

The Germiston-based Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team pounced on the unsuspecting 33-year-old traveller and a search of her luggage revealed a consignment of narcotics, established to be 10kg of cocaine.

Vigilant customs officials and sniffer dogs also looked for possible accomplices.

According to police Captain Lloyd Ramovha, two suspects were identified and monitored in the international arrivals hall.

The two men were approached and brought to the police station for questioning, he says.

“They stated that they were waiting for a traveller from elsewhere, but they couldn’t provide proof thereof.

“It was eventually established that they were waiting for the arrested alleged drug mule who lives in Motherwell in Port Elizabeth.”

He says the two accomplices are both Nigerian nationals aged 37 and 52.

The trio is scheduled to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.
