Carolina woman set alight: Man appears in court

Neighbours came to the woman's rescue when they were woken by her screams for help. They extinguished the fire and she was taken to hospital.

An attempted murder accused, Innocent Sthembiso ‘Spoto’ Maseko, appeared in the Carolina Magistrate’s Court yesterday, following his arrest for allegedly setting a 22-year-old woman alight in Carolina. The woman was saved by neighbours and is in hospital.

The case was postponed to Monday to obtain legal representation for a formal bail hearing. Maseko was remanded in custody.

According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli, the accused allegedly poured flammable liquid on the woman and set her alight in the early hours of Tuesday.

Mdhluli said the accused was traced and arrested a few hours later on the same day as the incident.

“According to the report, neighbours were woken by the sound of a woman screaming for help. They went out to investigate and saw the woman in agony, engulfed in flames, while her male companion reportedly poured liquid from a two-litre container on her. He realised the neighbours were coming to the woman’s rescue and fled the scene. The neighbours did their best to extinguish the fire, and the woman was taken to hospital for medical treatment,” he said.
