3 injured in explosion at Polokwane hospital

An MRI machine was being decommissioned in the Pietersburg Provincial Hospital's Radiation Unit when an explosion occurred.

The Limpopo Department of Health has confirmed that three people were injured during an explosion at the Pietersburg Provincial Hospital yesterday.

Provincial departmental spokesperson Neil Shikwambana states the injured includes two hospital employees and a technician from a private company working on decommissioning an MRI machine.

“The three individuals sustained moderate injuries after the MRI machine expelled large volumes of air in the hospital’s Radiology Unit,” his statement reads.

Shikwambana adds the expelled air caused infrastructure damage, which resulted in the injuries.

“No fatalities have been reported. An assessment is still underway to determine the cause of the damage. Updates will be provided as they become available,” he says.

Health MEC Dieketseng Mashego visited the injured.

“We rushed here to assess the extent of the damage and to wish the injured a speedy recovery,” she says.
