Decomposing body of missing KZN 9-year-old girl found

A community member who was herding his cattle found the body of a young girl who had been missing since the end of July.

The decomposing body of nine-year-old Asenathi Ngcobo, who went missing on July 29, was found in a marsh area at Henley Dam in KZN yesterday afternoon.

On the day of her disappearance, Asenathi, who lived with her family’s former neighbour in the Snathing area in Edendale is said to have gotten out of a taxi and headed for her home after visiting a clinic with her mother.

Her family relocated in June and left Asenathi with their trusted neighbour so she could be closer to the school. She was in Grade Four at Snathing Primary School.

According to her mother Nondumiso Ngcobo, they got a call from the investigating officer of the case notifying her of the horrifying news.

We were told that my child was found by a community member who was herding his cattle.

“The child was still wearing her school uniform. It is hard to describe the pain that I am feeling. My child had a bright future ahead of her,” says Ngcobo.

uMgungundlovu police spokesperson Sergeant Sifiso Gwala says an inquest docket was opened for investigation.

Gwala says they are waiting for the postmortem to determine the cause of death.
