Watch: Tatjana Smith bags SA’s first gold at Paris 2024 Olympics

South Africa's first gold medal at this year's Olympic Games in France has been won thanks to the sensational swimmer.

Tatjana Smith (formerly Schoenmaker) has done it! The South African bagged the gold medal in the women’s 100m breaststroke as she beat Tang Qianting from China and Mona McSharry from Ireland.

The 27-year-old from Johannesburg is the current Olympic record holder in the event, with a time of 1:04.82 that she swam in Tokyo in 2021.

Tonight’s time of 1:05.28 at the Paris La Defense Arena was, however, enough to bag another Olympic medal for her, adding to her gold and silver at the Tokyo Olympic Games.

At the same event, she won a gold medal in the women’s 200m breaststroke, where she set a new world record of 2:18.95.

Meanwhile, Pieter Coetzé ended fifth in the men’s 100m breaststroke with a time of 52:58, losing to Italian Thomas Ceccon who bagged gold with a time of 52:00.
