East Rand family murders: Evidence delays prompt postponement

Anton Bouwer is accused of killing his parents, stepdaughter and domestic worker, as well as the attempted murder of his wife.

The case against quadruple murder accused Pomona businessman Anton Bouwer was yesterday morning postponed in the Kempton Park Regional Court.

In the application for a postponement, state prosecutor Ninette Lambden said the state was awaiting the finalisation of further evidence.

She added that the state was also awaiting details of a criminal report from 2011, but declined to offer further details.

Lambden warned the court that a man had been attempting to threaten and bribe witnesses in the matter.

Bouwer’s defence attorney Hugo van der Westhuizen, however, dismissed the claims stating that it was the first that he had heard of attempts made to contact witnesses.

Van der Westhuizen added that no progress has been made in the case and that his client had been imprisoned for six months already.

Watch as he appeared yesterday:

During his court appearance prior to yesterday’s one, Bouwer (who is housed at Modderbee Prison) appeared in court via live video feed on May 15.

Bouwer stands accused of killing his parents Bettie (73) and Robert (78) Bouwer on January 22 at their house in Bredell.

He is also accused of killing his stepdaughter Natasha Bouwer (22) and domestic worker Elizabeth Mahlangu (56) at a house in Fairleads, Benoni, on the same day.

Bouwer will additionally face a charge of attempted murder for the shooting of his wife, Adelle.
