SAPS react to bomb threat at Durban Magistrate’s Court

Yesterday's bomb threat follows a recent incident at a local high school, as well as explosive devices being found outside a mosque.

Hundreds of people were evacuated from the Durban Magistrate’s Court after a bomb threat was made on the building yesterday morning.

Members of the public, as well as other officials, evacuated after a person called, stating a bomb in the building would go off at 10:30.

Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda says the building had to be evacuated as a precaution.

“The Explosives and K9 units of the South African Police Service in KZN conducted a precautionary search and sweep at the Durban Magistrate’s Court. This is after an unknown person called the court and announced that there was a bomb, which he said would go off at 10:30. The search was completed, and no bomb was found. The building has been declared safe,” he adds.

More than a week ago, Hillcrest High School was evacuated after a similar bomb threat was called in.

That incident turned out to be a hoax.

In Durban North on July 8, two homemade explosive devices were discovered dumped outside the entrance of Musjid ur Rahman.

In that case, police bomb technicians were called out to the scene and confirmed the devices consisted of commercial explosives.
