Former heavyweight boxer’s murder: Man to appear in Germiston court

A man was arrested after Mark 'Striker' Strydom was on Saturday night fatally shot at a sports diner in Edenvale.

The man arrested in connection with the murder of former heavyweight boxer Mark ‘Striker’ Strydom will appear in a Germiston court today.

Strydom was shot dead at Grand Slam Sports Diner in Dowerglen, Edenvale, on Saturday night.

Edenvale SAPS is investigating the case.

Warrant Officer Jacob Mashile confirmed that paramedics declared Strydom dead at the scene.

The incident began with a dispute between Strydom and a woman, which escalated into a chaotic gunfight with the suspect.

“The deceased allegedly pulled out a firearm and fired four or five shots randomly.”

Strydom fired multiple shots before he was shot twice, allegedly by the suspect. He was arrested, and a firearm was confiscated.

Strydom, known in Johannesburg’s southern suburbs for his ‘violent past’, had reportedly found religion in 2000.

Tributes from friends and the boxing community flooded social media.

“My heart is broken at the tragic death of a dear friend and a true legend Mark Strydom,” posted Taryn Mills Bean.
