6 firefighters killed in KZN runaway fires

Two firefighters are in critical condition and six others have died in devastating KZN fires.

Three more firefighters who were yesterday fighting the fire on a farm along the R617 near Boston in Mpophomeni, KZN, have died in hospital.

Operations director from Midlands Emergency Medical Services Roland Robertson confirmed the deaths, saying two were men and one was a woman.

“They all died of burn wounds and were in a critical condition from the time we arrived at the scene. There’s still two others in critical condition,” says Robertson.

Robertson explains that they had to battle the intense heat as the fire approached them, while trying to assist injured firefighters.

“When we arrived, it was still hot and while we were still busy, the fire was coming towards us. We had to drive through the fire at the beginning to get to the firefighters,” says Robertson.

Yesterday, it was reported that runaway fires in KZN had killed three firefighters, and seven others, including a pregnant woman.
