12 whoonga addicts murdered in Pietermaritzburg: 3 men get life in prison

Alleged drug addicts suffered a horrifying death when they were locked in the bathroom of a house that was set on fire.

Three men charged with the mass murder of 12 alleged whoonga (a mixture of low-grade heroine and other additives) addicts in KwaMpande in Pietermaritzburg last year have been sentenced to life in prison.

They were sentenced by the Pietermaritzburg High Court yesterday.

Mandisa Ngcobo (30), Mthobisi Makhathini (28) and Sanele Aubrey Phetha (40) were charged with 12 counts of murder, three of attempted murder, one of robbery and one of arson.

Earlier this year, the court found them guilty of beating and burning alive 12 whoonga addicts after confining them to a bathroom in KwaMpande, near Taylors Halt, on May 14 last year.

The 12 deceased – Thobani Ngubane, Zuzani Praise-Lord Zondi, Sduduzo Nkomo, Nkanyiso Dlamini, Mthokozisi Madlala, Butho Shelembe, Nkosinathi Handsome Mtolo, Siyabonga, Reginald Madondo, Patrick Thembinkosi Dlamini, Sandile Ngcobo, Patrick Samkelo Zondi and Jabulani Ntuli – were allegedly sitting in their drug dealer’s home smoking whoonga when about eight men stormed the house looking for alleged drug dealer, Lizwi Ngcobo.
